Is it your problem?
Often I have clients saying to me “our culture is no good and I wish it would change."
They talk about responsibility and accountability but are usually looking at others to be responsible and accountable. So it was with great interest that I read this Seth Godin blog the other day.
"It's not my problem"
But what if it was?
What if the apparently intractable cultural issues that you take for granted were instead seen as problems on your desk, things you could influence?
What if the rules others take for granted are seen by you and your team as standards you can change?
What if we take the responsibility instead of waiting for it to be offered?
What a great reminder that we are responsible and accountable for the problems that exist and for the things we might not like about our organisation. We can start the ripple of change whenever we like, by changing ourselves and our teams.
One of my sayings that I repeat often to clients is.. "We are all the keepers of the keys to the culture of the organisation".
So I challenge you to be intentional about the culture you create at both an individual and team level. To be deliberate about the style of the organisation you create.
